Mid And Late 19th Century Fashion 1840-1900
Dress
This dress is an original day dress from c. 1860-62 its made from a purple silk its fabric with black brocaded stripes forming geometric figures. Lined, darted bodice with large velvet covered buttons for front closure, jewel neckline; black velvet ribbon trim creates plastron effect. Coat sleeves with black velvet "brandebourgs" down lower arm and cuff; self-fabric pleating, black velvet and silk fringe trim form epaulettes at shoulder. Horizontal black velvet trim continued down side fronts of box pleated skirt. The skirt is lined and protected at the hem with a wool brush braid.
They can be made from silk, wool, cotton, or any blends out of those three fibers.
Tea- has a square neckline, closes in the front with hooks and eyes and is made out of silk.
Evening- is off the shoulders, is made out of silk and closes in the back with both hooks and eyes and eyelets.
Wrapper- 19th century version of a house coat or robe either made out of silk or wool and closes with buttons and can be worn over a hoop.
Work- A plain day dress usually made from cotton or wool and closes in the front with buttons

Head ware
Bonnets- Slat would be worn by children, young ladies & women when they were either working or playing outside and didn't want to trash their nicer bonnets. They are made from cotton and something to stiffen the brim a old cereal box cut into long 1/2" strips would work. Spoon is referring to the shape/style, Straw is referring to the base material. Most bonnets are made with buckram and millinery wire and then covered with silk and decorated with silk flowers, feathers, ribbons and other trimmings.
Hats- Hats were mostly worn by young children and young ladies. Women would wear hats when they were at the waterfront or countryside.

Fichu- a woman's shawl or scarf of some light material, worn esp in the 18th century from French: small shawl, from ficher to fix with a pin, from Latin fīgere to fasten. Usually worn to cover low necklines.
Bertha- a removable neckline decoration
Hair- Combs were made from tortoiseshell or Gutta Percha aka Indian Rubber & Headdresses made with either wild flowers or flowers made out of silk fabric.
